Distributed Online Learning of Central Pattern Generators in Modular Robots

چکیده
In this paper we study distributed online learning of locomotion gaits for modular robots. The learning is based on a stochastic approximation method, SPSA, which optimizes the parameters of coupled oscillators used to generate periodic actuation patterns. The strategy is implemented in a distributed fashion, based on a globally shared reward signal, but otherwise utilizing local communication only. In a physicsbased simulation of modular Roombots robots we experiment with online learning of gaits and study the effects of: module failures, different robot morphologies, and rough terrains. The experiments demonstrate fast online learning, typically 5-30 min. for convergence to high performing gaits (≈ 30 cm/sec), despite high numbers of open parameters (45-54). We conclude that the proposed approach is efficient, effective and a promising candidate for online learning on many other robotic platforms.

Learning to Move in Modular Robots using Central Pattern Generators and Online Optimization
This article addresses the problem of how modular robotics systems, i.e. systems composed of multiple modules that can be configured into different robotic structures, can learn to locomote. In particular, we tackle the problems of online learning, that is, learning while moving, and the problem of dealing with unknown arbitrary robotic structures. We propose a framework for learning locomotion...
متن کاملLocomotion in Modular Robots based on Central Pattern Generators
We address the problem of learning to locomote in modular robotic systems, i.e. systems made from multiple homogenous or heterogenous and highly autonomous modules being assembled into a bigger robotic structure, other than monolithic robots (such as humanoid robot systems or predefined quadruped robots). We are particulary interested in online learning of robust and adaptive locomotion for arb...
متن کاملRoombots—Modular Robots for Adaptive Furniture
We aim at merging technologies from Information Technology, Roomware, and Robotics in order to design adaptive and intelligent furniture. This paper presents the framework for modular robots, called Roombots, as future building blocks for furniture that moves and self-reconfigures. The reconfiguration is done using dynamic connection and disconnection of modules and rotations of the degrees of ...
متن کاملDistributed Adaptive Locomotion by a Modular Robotic System, M-TRAN II From Local Adaptation to Global Coodinated Motion Using CPG Controllers
A modular robot has a distributed mechanical composition which can make various configurations and also make locomotion in a wide variety of configurations. Modular robots are thought to be useful in extreme or unknown environments by adaptively changing their shape and locomotion patterns. As for locomotion, two types can be used; one is whole-body fixed-configuration locomotion and the other ...
متن کاملHexapod Robots: New CPG Model for Generation of Trajectories
Legged robots are often used in a large variety of tasks, in different environments. The large number of degrees-of-freedom, to be controlled during these tasks, turns the online generation of trajectories in these robots very complex. In this paper, we consider a modular approach to online generation of trajectories, based on biological concepts, namely Central Pattern Generators (CPGs). We in...
